The UNESCO youth forum

More than ever, UNESCO considers youth as true actors of change and progress, synonymous with mobility, dynamism and innovation.

More than an event taking place every two years since 1999, the forum is a space of open and dynamic dialogue allowing young participants from all members’ states of the organization, to formulate strategic recommendations on UNESCO’s programmes for youth.

Each day in the framework of its field of competence, the organization strives to multiply possibilities, to encourage new initiatives and to incite young women and men to act, at their level, towards changing the world. To build a better world, many challenges affecting youth need to be addressed, such as a broader access to education and culture, civic engagement and social inclusion, sustainable integrations in the job market, and the respect of the basic rights and freedom.

UNESCO youth desk

The UNESCO Youth Desk in Tanzania is a youth led affiliated body of the Tanzania National Commission for UNESCO established in response to the call of the 1st UNESCO African Youth Forum and 5th UNESCO Youth Forum held in Burkina Faso on 24th -28th September 2007 and in Paris (France) on 12th-13th October 2007 respectively. The UNESCO Youth Desk was officially launched on 16th December 2009 at Karimjee Hall Dar es Salaam. Prof. M.S. Sheya, the Tanzania’s Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO and the country’s representative to UNESCO Executive Board was the Guest of Honor.

It was a great pressure for the desk to prepare for this great event across the entire regional of East Africa. Youth across these countries come together on one table with one common theme to discuss "youth for sustainable development". the event was held at British Council on Monday 14th September to 15th September 2015.

Seth Charles Mkisi the coordinator of the event, the opening speech during the forum 14th September 2015. The success of the forum and the idea behind was his own in hand to hand with his organizing committee. 

The event was covered by different media includes news magazine and televisions stations and also from radio stations. Under the main theme “Youth for Sustainable Planet”, the Forum was focused on three interconnected thematic areas (sub-themes), which are highly topical and have the potential to generate dynamic exchange and concrete ideas.

What can I say about this young lady, Amina Mtengei the host of this unforgotten event. The host of the event from its begin up to its end, presenting topics to delegate and observers to discuss and provided guidelines about the format of the event on key areas of the discussion and recommendation among the delegates.

This edition’s theme is “Young Global Citizens for a Sustainable Planet”, to allow discussion of sustainable development challenges in the post-2015 context, while also maintaining a focus on climate change and related global debates around the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21).
